Kolkata's 100% vegan cafe, Ubuntu Community – The Vegan Cafe has won the hearts of many, be it vegans or non-vegetarians. The cafe offers a vast menu which includes both Bengali classics and continental cuisines.

We caught up with the co-founder, Abhinav Bajpai for a quick chat and he shared their experience with the pandemic and the response of non-vegans to their food.

Abhinav said that the vegan mock meat dishes are loved by both vegans and non-vegetarians. He shared that the café always makes space for dialogue, and that they have had many non-vegans who are curious to try vegan food. Some people don’t believe that it isn’t real meat, while some recognize the difference but still relish it.

The café has expanded their menu over the year to include a wide range of dishes. It includes mock meats like chicken, mutton, fysh, shrimps, and salami. Their pulled-pork burger is a new addition, and their latest hit consists of the classic Butter Chicken, which was an instant bestseller.

Ubuntu Community is for foodies, and they offer the same taste and feeling that one gets with traditional meat and dairy dishes.

“We get about 60% non-vegans. The rest are vegetarian. And when I say non-vegans, I mean non-vegetarians. It is very hard to find vegans, even vegetarians here,” the co-founder told Vegan First. “Most of them are shocked when they come here because they never expect a vegan place to have either fish fry or butter chicken on the menu.”

Ubuntu Community is especially known for their Fysh Fry, which is a replica of the real fish flavour and has done very well in the city.

“In Bengal if somebody can replace the fish, it can be one of the world’s biggest achievements!”

“Vegans are not at all our target. Our target is non-vegans. We are very happy when non-vegans love our fysh fry, kosha mangsho, or butter chicken – there is some success there.” He said that the menu encourages non vegetarians to eat here as it offers them food that they are familiar with. “They start understanding that vegan food can be as delicious as regular food.”

Ubuntu Community started home delivery right before the pandemic, which helped them get through during the lockdown. They started dine-in again in October and their footfall has increased since.

Ubuntu Community is also doing a Biryani Buffet on New Year’s Eve, and are considering adding biryani to the menu, called the ‘Unmutton Dum Biryani’.

They wish to expand to more locations within Kolkata to reach more people. They have also received requests to expand the cafe to different cities outside Bengal and might consider expanding soon.

How to get there?
