On this World Ocean Day 2021, we profile this year’s powerful documentary - Seaspiracy and have a look at some Indian celebrities who spoke about how it moved them.

The documentary uncovered some harsh truths about what we are doing to our seas. Director Ali Tabrizi explores how overfishing, plastic pollution and human rights violations are rampant and being ignored by most leading conservation organisations.

While many of these celebrities are vegan, we hope that the ones who aren’t are still doing their bit by talking about the cruelty of the animal industry. This will help more people learn the truth behind the human destruction of the planet and inspire them to be kinder to the animals.

Shraddha Kapoor

Proudly plant-based, Shraddha Kapoor often shares photos of delicious vegan food she eats. After watching Seapiracy, she shared the poster of the documentary and added “This needs to be watched immediately. A shocking and eye-opening account of the many truths that need to be known”.

Samantha Akkineni

Telugu and Tamil actress, Samantha Akkineni revealed she went vegan in 2020 saying “it empowers me every single day”. After watching Seaspiracy she was moved to post that she was “feeling sick” and “ashamed” for eating tuna in the past. Samantha can be found sharing photos of vegan food regularly. She also has an interest in growing her own vegetables.

Kajal Aggarwal

Kajal Aggarwal took to her social media accounts and penned her thoughts after watching Seaspiracy. She wrote “It's appalling how the fisheries industry is given such liberties and nobody raises a voice or questions them. There are no laws or government control on what happens in the deep oceans. There is no such thing as sustainable fishing. Terribly sad but true. And the only way to conserve our oceans is to stop eating marine animals." Kajal has been plant-based for a few years and talks about it frequently to her followers.

Sadaa Sayed

Ethical vegan and vegan cafe owner, actress Sadaa Sayed does more than speak up for the animals that she cares about. She has been quoted saying “When we advocate for marine protection and environmentalism, we tend to forget about this giant industry destroying our planet, disrupting marine ecology and destroying non human animal lives” after watching Seapiracy. Sadaa runs a vegan cafe in Mumbai called Earthlings.

Bhumi Pednekar

Vocal and active in her concern for the environment, actress Bhumi Pednekar pleaded with her fans to watch the documentary after watching it herself. “Please please watch this on @Netflix…” she wrote as a caption over a screenshot of the film. She has been profiling climate activists in a series called ‘Climate Warrior’ on her Instagram account. Bhumi announced that she had turned vegetarian in 2020.
