Actor and Politician Shatrughan Sinha Urges MCI To Ban Animal Dissection
Former Union Health Minister and BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha wrote to the Medical Council Of India urging them to ban animal dissection and experimentation in post-graduate medical courses. This comes after an appeal from PETA to look for humane, non-animal alternatives.
The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals Act, 1960, instructs that non-animal training be used when available.
"Animal dissection is a vestige of a more cruel, less enlightened time before modern technology and teaching methods existed."
Shatrughan Sinha
Animal Dissection is legally conducted in most sectors of the Pharmaceutical Industry
Sinha wrote to the MCI on an appeal from PETA, who highlighted the fact that in the USA and Canada, medical schools have been using non-animal training methods in their classrooms for years.
"The use of animals for teaching purposes in both undergraduate and graduate courses has already been ended by the University Grants Commission, the Pharmacy Council of India and the Dental Council of India."
PETA
Sinha added that computer-assisted learning (CAL) methodologies can be used to replace animal dissection and that CAL techniques are practical, feasible and ultimately cost-effective because they can be used repeatedly.
