The international ice cream chain Baskin Robbins has released a plant-based ice cream with an oat milk base all across the United States. It claims to be the first ice cream chain to launch an oat milk ice cream nationally.

The new plant-based flavour is called Non-Dairy Strawberry Streusel and is the Flavour of the Month for May. Baskin Robbins emphasizes on its creaminess and resemblance to dairy ice creams in terms of taste and texture.

The oat milk ice cream is a limited-period addition to the menu, although Baskin Robbins has hinted at the launch of more oat milk-based flavours later this year.

“We’re a brand that’s all about creating new flavor experiences. With so many people living plant-based or flexitarian lifestyles today, we couldn’t be more excited to launch our new oat milk-based option. We’re so passionate about this new base and Flavor of the Month as it’s not just an evolution of our offerings, but a sign of our passion and commitment to creating what’s ‘next’ in frozen desserts,” commented Shannon Blakely, Vice President of Marketing and Culinary at Baskin-Robbins.

Will this launch be extended to India?

Baskin Robbins has acknowledged the rising demand for dairy-free ice creams in India. The brand debuted its first plant-based ice creams in the country in December 2020. This launch consisted of coconut milk-based versions of two of their most popular flavours - Alphonso Mango and Mississippi Mud.

India is a lucrative market and major brands, both national and global, are gradually stepping into the plant-based sector. Moreover, the popularity of flexitarian diets, health-conscious consumers, as well as the lactose intolerant population of the country have sustained the demand for dairy-free products.

In an exclusive interview with Vegan First, Mr. Mohit Khattar, CEO,  Graviss Foods Pvt. Ltd. (Baskin Robbins) stated, “Veganism as a movement will only strengthen and gather steam as I see it. Baskin Robbins in some ways will lead other mainstream brands to take a closer look at the needs of the vegan consumer in India.”

With the success of Baskin Robbins’ oat milk ice cream in the U.S., the Indian audience is sure to welcome another plant-based addition to the brand’s menu!
