In a groundbreaking initiative, cultured or cultivated meat will be available for home delivery for the first time. This is a result of a partnership between Eat Just and the food delivery service foodpanda.

Starting in Singapore on Earth Day, i.e. April 22, 2021, Eat Just’s cultivated chicken dishes will be available for home delivery through the restaurant called 1880, which was the first restaurant to serve Eat Just’s GOOD Meat. The company, known for its plant-based egg called Just Egg, teamed up with the restaurant to develop some dishes such as chicken & coconut rice, chicken Caesar salad, and katsu chicken curry.

“Food is at the core of our business, and ensuring that we have a sustainable food ecosystem is an important agenda for us. Together with Eat Just, we hope to bring this to more markets—not just in Asia but also in every country in the world where [foodpanda’s parent company] Delivery Hero brands operate,” stated Jakob Angele, CEO, foodpanda APAC.

Last year, Singapore became the first country to sanction the sale of cultured meat in the market. According to the Good Food Institute, Singapore’s Food Agency is actively working towards developing the food technology sector. The country may soon see more cultured meat and seafood startups entering the market, including Shiok Meats, Ants Innovate, and Avant Meats (known for their cultivated fish maw, which is a costly seafood).

GFI APAC Acting Managing Director Mirte Gosker comments: "Anything conventional meat can do, cultivated meat can do better, and now consumers in Singapore can get a taste of the future without leaving the comfort of home. This is a small but important proof of concept that should catalyze leaders from both the public and private sectors to invest the significant scientific resources needed to bring this smarter way of making meat to the masses."

Josh Tetrick, CEO, Eat Just will be participating in a town hall on 30th April, along with the Game Changers director Louie Psihoyos, and Bruce Friedrich, Executive Director of The Good Food Institute. The virtual town hall will emphasize on the importance of sustainable alternatives for meat.

The Cultivated Meat Revolution

This endeavor is a step towards making food technology more accessible. Cultured meat may not be vegan, and the opinions regarding its ethics are divided, but it has proven to be a sustainable alternative to conventional meat, as well as a safer option in terms of public health. It has the potential to revolutionize the current food system and reduce the carbon footprint of the animal agriculture industry by a significant amount.
