Burger King Introduces Vegan Whopper

Burger King just put a meat-free, plant-based Impossible Whopper on its menu! For now, the burger, which will use Impossible Foods' soy-based burger patty, will be available at 59 locations in the St. Louis area. And, based on how it fares, the company could roll it out to all branches in the United States - which total over 7000. That would be HUGE!

This isn't the first time a major fast food chain has embraced vegan alternatives. Carl's Jr. has been selling vegetarian burgers using Beyond Meat patties since January, and burger chain White Castle has been selling slider versions of the Impossible burger in 380 locations since 2018.

The marketing team at Burger King confirmed that many staffers weren't able to tell the difference between the meat and plant-based burgers.

"People on my team who know the Whopper inside and out, they try it and they struggle to differentiate which one is which.”

Fernando Machado, Chief Marketing Officer, Burger King

A major global chain like Burger King embracing plant-based alternatives signals a change in consumer demand, as more people want to see meat alternatives in the market - for both health and ecological reasons. Perhaps we can look forward to a plant-based Whopper in India in the year ahead! What do you think?
