Burger King To Open Its First-Ever Meat-Free Restaurant

Burger King will be opening a limited-period meat-free restaurant in Cologne, Germany this June. The menu for this outlet will be developed in collaboration with the Dutch brand The Vegetarian Butcher, known for their plant-based meats.

The menu will feature some of Burger King’s pre-existing options such as plant-based nuggets made with soy, as well as its new vegan launch - the Plant-Based Long Chicken Sandwich which contains plant-based chicken and vegan mayonnaise. However, there is no certainty whether there will be dairy-free alternatives available at this restaurant.

The restaurant will be running from 7th to 11th June in Cologne. Burger King will also be hosting an event at the location with the option of virtual attendance, the date for which is unannounced. This meeting will allow guests to connect with a few Burger King heads, and the former will be asked to answer some questions regarding Burger King’s efforts in the plant-based arena.

The fast food giant has made some recent plant-based launches in Europe and China, including an Impossible Whopper, made with Impossible Foods, and the Chicken Royale.

International fast-food chains are recognizing the growth of demand for plant-based options and rapidly adapting to the shift. In April, Taco Bell launched a Beyond Meat taco at a test site in Southern California, while McDonald’s announced its partnership with Beyond Meat to co-develop plant-based meats. This year, Starbucks also launched a 100% vegan test-site in Seattle to experiment its plant-based options and record the demand. In India, Domino’s Pizza introduced a plant-based meat pizza in December.
