Burger King's Spain Branch Ditches Meat and names it 'Vurger King'
29 October 2021
Burger King in Spain is now Vurger King. The major food chain just went entirely meatless in one of its outlets in Spain. For one month, the Spain branch, Paseo del Prado is going meatless and will serve an entirely vegetarian menu. The menu will also have plant-based chicken nuggets. The fast-food chain named the outlet ‘Vurger King’ after it decided to go vegetarian for a whole month. The branch has decided to do this in collaboration with Unilever-owned The Vegetarian Butcher, a meatless brand that has signed to supply all plant-based alternatives on the menu for the restaurant.
“We want to reach both people who base their diet on vegetable products and those who do eat meat but want to reduce their consumption,” Borja Hernández de Alba, the general director of Burger King parent company Restaurant Brands in Spain and Portugal, told Spanish outlet 20 Minutos.
They had also changed the interiors to theme the plant-based menu with green murals and hanging plants on the walls. Besides, they have also changed their Spain branch’s social media handles to Vurger King for promotions.
Speaking of this transformation, the branch director and the operations manager of Spain and Portugal’s Burger King said that people are preferring plant-based food more than ever and this demand is more in flexitarians. “We want to reach both people who base their diet on vegetable products and those who do eat meat but want to reduce their consumption,” said Borja Hernández de Alba.
Previously Burger King became the first-ever global chain to add Impossible’s Vegan Chicken Nugget. Both companies, Burger King and The Vegetarian Butcher, are working together to make plant-based burgers possible in 25 different countries including Germany, Frame, Mexico, South Africa, and China.
The temporary vegetarian and plant-based menu will have Long Vegetal or a plant-based Long Chicken, a plant-based Whopper, and vegan chicken nugget. They will also have sandwiches and customers can have vegan mayonnaise on request. Earlier this year the company also said that the UK locations of Burger King will aim to go 50% plant-based by 2031.
