As a nation, India has always been a country that has been a home to a significant number of vegetarians. But now more than ever, the vegetarians as well as meat lovers in India are gravitating toward more sustainable food alternatives. This helped the vegan food market in the country thrive. A 2019 Ipsos survey showed that over 63 percent of citizens would decline and crave plant-based substitutes in the coming years. Well, that was precisely when BVeg Foods saw its inception as the startup geared up to cater to the needs of vegans.

The bourgeoning startup has come a long way since, and has now erected a facility to fulfil India’s need for a manufacturing plant that can produce home-grown plant-based alternatives for meat. This is a wonderful step, as BVeg Foods had in the past identified the lack of a large manufacturing plant in India as a major blockage to the success of the sector.

All about BVeg Foods’ offerings and product line

At the moment BVeg Foods has the capacity to manufacture 4,000 metric tons of plant-based meat annually. This is soon to increase to the extent of 12,000 metric tons. The homegrown startup is on a mission to revolutionize plant-based meat they offer via tactical partnerships. In the beginning of 2022, BVeg declared that it is on a project with Austrian equipment supplier Bühler to bring high moisture extrusion technology to the new BVeg plant in India. This is a great way to ensure that the finished product very closely resembles the whole muscle in animal protein.

COO Prateek Ghai’s vision for BVeg Foods

Speaking of their launch, Prateek Ghai, BVeg Foods co-founder and COO stated, “In the rapidly transforming plant-based food ecosystem, innovation is key. We believe that only by continuously innovating ourselves and delivering a diversified range of products that are customized to consumer needs can we satisfy their palates and achieve our objective of replacing conventional meat across the globe without compromising on taste or nutrition.”

How this startup is supporting India’s rising demand for plant-based products

The startup revealed photos of their cohesive plant-based meat production factory and it is touted to be the most massive facility for plant-based meat in India. Not only is it a fully functional facility, but the production factory is a one-stop solution for other vegan-friendly brands, together with BVeg’s dedicated offerings. In an effort to aid and abet India’s rising demand for vegan meat, the company has ensured new product can be created and ingredients can be sourced easily by external partners. They are also offering private label packaging along with high-capacity manufacturing capabilities.

New regulations that were announced for India’s plant-based segment

For the uninitiated, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India just announced new guidelines for plant-based foods and their manufacturers including BVeg. Companies producing vegan food products will have to adhere to their set guidelines that surround manufacture and labelling of their packaged goods. This is to ensure that each product has proper plant-based identification, furthermore, this will eliminate the chance of animal product-based adulteration.
