Chitale Bandhu Mithaiwale, one of Maharashtra’s biggest confectionaries, is planning to start a new vegan range of mithais and snacks. Famous for its sweets and snacks like bhakadwadi and namkeen, the brand will be stepping into the vegan market soon.

Chitale has been one of the early movers to explore food technology in the FMCG industry. The brand has been ever evolving, changing as per the customers’ preferences, which has been one of the reasons for its fame. Living up to their reputation, the much-loved brand is seeking to expand its portfolio and reach out to the vegan community.

We caught up with the CEO Indraneel Chitale of Chitale Bandhu to discuss more.

“There has been a steady and informed changed in the dietary preferences of everyone around us. Be it for health reasons or other beliefs and causes, there is a defined market that needs a defined approach. That is what prompted us to work on the different dietary principles around us and come up with vegan alternatives in our range too,” he said. “Chitale as a brand is evolving and we are trying to widen our range and appeal and we wish to appeal to a wider set of audiences that make different choices. We as a brand want to be part of their journey and celebrations while safeguarding their beliefs.”

Chitale Bandhu’s idea is to stay ahead of the curve and be aware of the evolving FMCG industry. They have been open to new ideas and concepts in the past and aim to remain broad-minded in the future as well. This is a means to meet the demands of a large and varying consumer base.

We have always believed in the idea of adopting to new trends, technologies and philosophies and the vast choices of Indian sweet industry coupled with the vegan alternatives and innovation we can do definitely helps us remain relevant as a brand and stay ahead of the curve,” the CEO explained.

Chitale wishes to diversify their consumer base and be inclusive of growing diets and lifestyle trends. The CEO also mentioned growing health concerns among people being one of their driving factors. They have been working on manufacturing products with no added sugar, low GI as well as vegan, gluten-free and low-fat products. “This way, you will get to see a mix of products that adhere to these principles and dietary needs ranging from namkeens, to ethnic snacks to Indian sweets to modern takes on Indian desserts,” said Chitale.

The brand is keeping in mind the growing market and the persistent demand for packaged consumer goods even amidst a pandemic. The CEO claimed that the demand for plant-based products has always been present, and that they are willing to work towards meeting them. Introducing vegan-friendly products is a major step which will bring the brand recognition by the Indian vegan community.

“To ride this tide, you have to anticipate the needs and take a few bold steps. We are hoping our consumers love and actively engage with us in this evolving landscape.”
