Beverage companies produce over 500 billion single-use plastic bottles annually. World plastic production has literally doubled over the past 50 years. The Paper Bottle Company is an organization that is committed to reduce unnecessary plastic waste that manufacturers and distributors create, simply because of lack of sustainable bottling options in the mainstream market.

Carlsberg, one of the four largest breweries around the globe has been associated with the Paper Bottle Project since a long time. In a recent press release, the company claimed “We are working on developing the world’s first ‘paper’ beer bottle made from sustainably-sourced wood fiber that is both 100% bio-based and fully recyclable.” These paper bottles also contain a plant-based polymer called “PEF,” which makes these bottles fully recyclable, allowing them to naturally degrade within a year, unlike their plastic counterparts.

The company hit social media platforms with an exclusive image of the plant-based bottle for their Pilsner beer. The company certainly takes pride in its accomplishments, Christina Carlsen, Technical Director of the Paper Bottle Company says, “Being part of this journey from the beginning, inventing the technology and building the first machine for the paper bottle with my bare hands is my chance to make a difference. A difference towards a sustainable world for future generations. What we are doing is not just a new bottle, we are making a difference.”

Plastic packaging accounts for 35.8% of global plastic usage, companies may not be very vocal about their values, but their actions are certainly aimed at a sustainable future for their organization as well as the community. Apart from Carlsberg Group, companies like Coca-Cola, Carlsberg, L’Oréal and Absolut have also been supporting The Paper Bottle Company in its efforts to create sustainable bottles. FMCG giant Coca-Cola plans to be able to use the plant-based plastic for its bottled products by as soon as 2023.

These paper bottles could help mitigate the severe plastic pollution problem which is responsible for the death of over 1 million marine deaths every year. It would also help deal with the global warming crisis by reducing the carbon footprint on an individual level. This revolutionary plastic will not just change the packaging industry forever with its bio-degradable bottles but make being sustainable easier for companies.
