Dove Goes Cruelty-Free! Unilever Supports Ban On Animal Testing

This is BIG news. The second-largest beauty company in the world, Unilever, has officially announced it supports the global ban on animal testing in the cosmetics industry.

And that’s not all – Unilever’s largest personal care brand, Dove, is now officially PETA-certified cruelty-free. PETA’s cruelty-free logo will appear on all Dove packaging from January 2019 onwards!

In a press release, Unilever stated it would support Human Society International’s (HSI) #BeCrueltyFree initiative, which seeks legislative reform in major beauty markets to prohibit animal testing and trade. The campaign also aims to educate consumers and raise awareness about animal testing.

“Animal testing for cosmetics has been banned in the EU since 2013, and we hope that an adoption of similar bans in other countries will accelerate the regulatory acceptance of alternative approaches and thereby remove any requirements for any animal testing for cosmetics anywhere in the world.”

HSI wants to ban animal testing for good

California became the first state in the United States earlier this year to ban the sale of cosmetics that undergo animal testing, and more consumers are demanding cruelty-free and earth-friendly products in their makeup bags.

HSI hopes that having an FMCG giant like Unilever on board will accelerate policy change and see their goal of banning testing entirely by 2023, come to fruition.

While some say there’s a lot more Unilever can do considering its market position, one can’t deny the fact that this is a turning point– and it could be the start for massive reform in the beauty industry globally.

For now, keep your eyes peeled for the cruelty-free bunny logo on Dove products when you hit the stores in 2019!
