India is one of the largest producers of milk and has the world’s largest dairy herd of over 300 million bovines. India is also one of the highest consumers of milk. North Indian cuisine uses dairy as paneer and butter, while South Indian cuisine as curd. Traditional sweets across India are made with milk and milk-based ingredients. Milk also features a lot in Hindu religious practices. Milk used to be produced at a household level till the mid 20th century post which the white revolution changed dairy production in India.

Maa Ka Doodh is an explosive documentary directed by Dr. Harsha Atmakuri. He is a doctor turned activist and the movie traces his investigative journey across 20,000 kms with over 100 interviews with key voices like Maneka Gandhi, Archarya Prashant. The entire documentary took over 2.5 years in the making and will premiere on 15th September 2022 at the Himalayan Vegan Festival in Nepal.

The film’s poster reads “India is the largest producer of milk, it is also one of the largest exporters of beef. This is NOT an accident.” The director was stunned when he learnt about this and it is the starting point of this documentary. Dr. Harsha makes it his quest to find out the reasons. He says on his website, “From the day I initiated this project, and up until its completion, this film has been awakening me.” This documentary not only covers the cruel practises in the dairy industry but also the impact of its consumption on human health and the impact of  this industry on our environment. The documentary is but a medium for Dr. Harsha to present the truths that he experienced and uncovered through this journey. He hopes for people to use it as a revelation of truth and change their lives to bring compassion and justice to the animals on our planet.

A mother’s milk belongs to the mother and she chooses to nourish her baby. This most obvious statement in a human context, gets ignored when it comes to any other mammal’s body and her rights. Even with truth staring at us in the face, humans do not wish to understand the crime they commit or rather are in denial. Today it’s the cow, buffalo and goat, and camels are in vogue. Where does this end? The time has come to introspect on our way of life and the abuse and suffering it causes to other lives around us. It is time for a conscious and compassionate change. This documentary rightly titled Maa ka Doodh arms you with all the information to make that change, or to help your family understand and make that change.
