Estonia will ban fur farming by 2026, becoming the first Baltic country to do so. The bill was passed in the Estonian Parliament with 55 out of 101 members voting in favour of the ban.

The country has been phasing out the practice since before the bill was passed. There were no active mink farms in Estonia by June 2020, even though the country had 41 mink farms in 2015.

Many countries shut down mink fur farms in 2020 due to public health risks. In November, Hungary banned fur farming of minks, foxes, polecats, ferrets, and coypu. The ban was announced after some minks tested positive for coronavirus in fur farms in the US, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, France, Spain, Greece, and Sweden. Even luxury fashion brand Valentino declared it will be banning fur by 2022.

Moreover, 75% of Estonians were against animals being killed for fur according to a 2020 survey.

Claire Bass, the Executive Director of Humane Society International/UK said: “We celebrate with Estonia today, as it becomes the first Baltic country to ban cruel fur farming. And, we congratulate local animal welfare groups on their years of campaigning to get the ban done. This victory provides further affirmation that caging, electrocuting and gassing animals just to make bobble hats is a business that is on borrowed time. We hope that politicians in nearby Finland and Poland are inspired not to get left behind as Europe turns its back on the cruel and unnecessary fur trade. In recent years the UK has imported several hundred thousand pounds worth of fur from Estonia, making us complicit in the caged cruelty. But, with the UK government this week launching a Call for Evidence to consider a UK fur import and sales ban… We have a great opportunity to stop bankrolling fur factory farming overseas.”
