Actress Genelia D'Souza Deshmukh has teamed up with the non-profit Million Dollar Vegan to donate 100,000 vegan meals to Indians who have been struck by the second wave of the Covid-19 crisis. The actress announced this on social media, writing:

“India has been severely affected by the pandemic and it is up to us to do whatever we can to help. I am partnered with @milliondollarvegan_india to serve 100,000 plant-based meals to the needy over the coming weeks. Not only is the food delicious and nourishing for those who need it so desperately, but we are also introducing the idea that plant-based nourishment is the only way forward for this earth, the animals and ourselves.”

The non-profit has already been involved in donating vegan meals to Indians amidst the peak of the pandemic.

D'Souza Deshmukh is also the co-owner of the plant-based meat brand Imagine Meats, along with her husband Riteish Deshmukh. The company is to launch soon, and the couple has been promoting making the switch to plant-based options for the past year.

Riteish Deshmukh even went on the national entertainment show Bigg Boss, hosted by Bollywood icon Salman Khan, to promote Imagine Meats and saw a voice of support by Khan.

Bollywood celebrities have been actively participating in the plant-based movement that is gradually taking over the country. Last year, actors such as Malaika Arora Khan and Akshay Kumar adopted a plant-based diet and shared their daily diet on social media and interviews.

The Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli made headlines in 2019 when she announced his switch to a plant-based diet to recover from an injury. The celebrity athlete also recently set up two animal shelters in Mumbai.

Such efforts by influential names reach millions of their followers, having a wide-scale impact in carrying forward the plant-based movement. Deshmukh's initiative to plant-based food will also be instrumental in spreading awareness about food and public health while promoting safer alternatives.
