Plantaway offers one of the largest varieties of plant-based alternatives in India, right from Barista version Oat Mylk to Mutt’n Seekh Kebabs. So when we were asked to attend an exclusive food-tasting event specially curated for the Vegan First team, we couldn’t say no!

When a group of experienced hospitality professionals and renowned food service professionals come together to create a plant-based company, the bar is set really high. And we didn't expect any less from Plantaway. The entire wholesome experience superseded our expectations in terms of taste, hospitality, presentation and the wonderful company of the team Plantaway. Here's a comprehensive review of our unforgettable food-tasting journey.

As soon as we entered Intercontinental in Marine Drive where the tasting had been organised, we we were warmly welcomed by the team at Plantaway. We were guided to a table set with a curated tasting menu which incorporated all of Plantaway products. That's when we knew we were in for a symphony of tastes. There was an assortment of 12 unique dishes spanning appetisers, main courses, desserts, and drinks - showcasing the culinary diversity of Plantaway's products. Feast on the menu here >

Plantaway's Gourmet Vegan Menu

We were pleasantly surprised to see the versatility of their products in various cuisines - be it Asian, Indian, Continental, or Mughlai. Right from Grilled Chilli Cheese Toasties using Plantaway’s Cheddar cheese, Plantaway Minced Mutt’n Croquettes served with Plantaway Spicy Chipotle Mayo, to Dairy-free Blueberry Panna Cotta made with Plantaway Oat Mylk, the taste and product application were exceptional.

The Sizzling Starters

The Garlic bread made with Plantaway Dairy-free Butter was no different than the dairy butter ones, it was light and fresh. The Plantaway Chick’n Nuggets served with Plantaway’s Vegan Honey Mustard Mayonnaise was yummy and perfect in it's crunch, and bite factor. Ex-meat eaters from the Vegan First team gave their thumbs-up to this one.

Another standout was the Mutt'n Seekh Kebab Rolls - the tandoori aroma of the kebab was beautifully complemented by the richness of Plantaway's dips. "I can't believe this is vegan!" , validated an ex meat eater from the Vegan First team, with his mouth (and heart) full.

Upon asking the Co-founder of Plantaway, Romil Ratra, what he thinks are the biggest factors to consider while launching a product in this category are, he said there are three:

First one is taste - if a plant-based alternative tastes great, a (non-vegan) person is more likely to make the shift. Second is Functionality & Application - we’ve created products that behave similar to the animal-based products so that consumers find it easy to cook with them. For example, our Barista approved plant milks are heat stable and perform just like dairy; our cheeses and butter melt and spread exactly like dairy-based cheese and butter too! Third is Nutrition - we have tried to match or come as close as possible to the protein content of animal-based products so that health-conscious consumers can confidently make the switch.

An Impressive Selection of Mains

The Thai Kaprow Bowl is still fresh in our minds. Made with Plantaway’s Chick’n Keema, spicy Thai bird-eye chilli, holy basil, and jasmine rice - our minds were blown by the explosion of flavours in this one. Yet again, we noticed that the Chick’n Keema - or rather minced Chick’n - blended effortlessly into the dish.

The buttery plant-based keema melted in the mouth with the layers of rice, enhanced by caramelised onions and the faint touch of spices. This is delicious and feels so light on my stomach said another Vegan First team member. The two Keema dishes were so different in their taste that it was hard to believe that plant-based chick'n and mutt'n keema could be so versatile in their applications.

I was so impressed by the variety of flavours that lingered on at the Plantway tasting, the product application and the entire presentation. Each bite was a testament to the chef's ability to elevate a classic dish to new heights. The entire team has done an exceptional job with these amazing products. The Spaghetti No’lognese - a modern take on a classic Italian dish, was out of the world. It was made using Plantaway Mutt'n Mince, Pomodori Pelati, and fresh herbs and I will remember it for a very long time said Palak Mehta, CEO, Vegan First.

It’s true, without any odd smells, sights, or the cruelty, Plantaway's plant-based meat alternatives can be enjoyed by vegans, vegetarians as well as meat-eaters. veganfirst_plantaway_foodtasting

Till it was time for desserts, we were adequately full but none of us felt squeamish after having hogged so many ‘meaty’ dishes. Credit goes to the 100% pea protein they use to make mock meats while giving no off-putting burps or unappetising after-tastes.

The Decadent Desserts

The desserts were pure indulgence without guilt. The Dairy-free Blueberry Panna Cotta made from Plantaway Oat mylk arrived at the table as a work of art and showcased how versatile Oat Mylk could be in it's usage.

Their dairy-free payasam made from Plantaway Almond Mylk tasted like a traditional Payasam would. Almond mylk usuallly splits, but this was perfect. This made us curious and we wanted to know the secret behind this!

"Our test was Churchgate station ka chai wala," said Romil Ratra, co-founder of Plantaway. "Chaiwallah said the (plant) mylk will split but I stood there as he boiled and boiled the mylk, waiting for it to split but it never did!"  That churned out some laughter from the table. "We had formulated the products almost a year ago. But we didn't want to launch till we got them to be perfect. So we first launched with HoReCa (restaurants) and improvised after continuous feedback from the chefs. We launched only once we got it right!" added Ratra.

Plantaway products are available at top hotels and cafes like St. Regis, JW Marriott Juhu, Westin Goregaon, Grand Hyatt Gurgaon, and many more. But you can always order them online from the Plantaway website and experiment with them yourself.

The Plantaway Tasting event convinced us that the experts at Plantaway know their food and they are not just creating alternatives, they are creating a new category of foods which are tasty, practical, easy to use and cruelty-free.
