High Court asks Delhi Government to respond to Dairy Cattle Cruelty
In response to a petition by animal rights activist Ms Gauri Maulekhi (co-trustee, PFA), a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar has issued a notice to the Animal Welfare Board of India, Civic bodies and the Delhi Government asking them for a response to the same.
The petition claims that the well-being of cattle in the national capital is kept at stake for the sole purpose of catering to the dairy industry. Further, it gave details of the inhumane conditions in which animals are housed mentioning the fact that it is a violation of animal rights. As stated in The Hindu, Ms Gauri who is a co-opted member of AWBI said, “Animals are tethered with such short ropes that they are unable to lift their head, turn around, groom themselves or even ward off the flies that the filthy surroundings attract”. She further said, “It is not uncommon to inject these cattle with Oxytocin, a prescription drug, to boost milk production, sometimes two-three times a day”.
The respective bodies are expected to submit a status report to the court. The next hearing for the same is due on 23 April.
