H&M To Feature Vegan Cactus Leather In Upcoming Sustainable Collection Called ‘Science Story’
3 March 2021
Global fashion brand H&M will be introducing a sustainable vegan leather alternative made from cactus in its upcoming collection called ‘Science Story’, launching on 18 March 2021.
This initiative by H&M is an effort to lower the environmental impact of the fast fashion industry which is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions yearly, according to a report by the United Nations Environment Programme.
The cactus leather called Desserto, also known as nopal vegan leather, is sourced from Adriano Di Marti, a company started by two Mexican innovators - Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez. Desserto has won multiple awards internationally since its launch in 2019, including the Good Design Award Gold Accolade 2020.
Science Story is a part of H&M’s new sustainability concept called ‘Innovation Stories.’ H&M has also previously explored sustainable fashion practices with their use of organic and recycled materials as part of their ‘Conscious’ collections.
Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M adds:“Our new concept continues H&M’s journey towards a sustainable and circular fashion system.”
