You might think the city of haleem and biryani would be a tough place for vegans, but that’s not the case at all! Hyderabad has been crowned India’s most vegan-friendly city of 2019 by PETA India, and with reason.

The city has seen quite a spurt in vegan establishments, with 2 pure vegan restaurants, 2 gourmet vegan bakeries, a home-grown vegan ice cream brand and a 100% vegan store!

Here are some of the vegan establishments in the city you need to check out.

Poets & Oats/ The Terrasen Cafe

Launched in 2015 by Dhanesh Sharma, Terrassen was among the first pure-vegan cafes in the city. Their mission is to serve fresh, wholesome plant-based food that supports a sustainable lifestyle. The menu has something for every palate, from desi comfort food to sandwiches, salads, indulgent desserts and more.

Where: 8-2-418/1/2/, Banjara Hiils Road No.4 (Landmark: Animal Care Clinic and Rock Castle Restaurant).

Smart Alec Alternative Deli

Founded and run by the all-women team of Sanjna Muttreja, Sandhya Dittakavi and Mansi Virmani, the two-year-old café is a hit with vegans and non-vegans alike. Their mockmeat dishes and pizzas are popular, but they also have light bites like salads, soups and rice paper rolls.

Where: Shop no.1, Plot no.66, Surabhi Venkat Plaza, Surya Enclave, Cyber Towers to KPHB Road, Madhapur, Hyderabad

The Lush Glaze

A gourmet vegan bakery launched by ex-Googler Sharanya Sridhar, she makes beautiful cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, chocolates and cake jars. There’s no request she can’t handle, from layered cakes to quirky character cakes.

Frozera

The brainchild of Madhulika Jajodia, she launched the brand because she wanted to show consumers that you don’t need dairy to make yummy ice creams. With delicious fruit-based and chocolatey flavours to choose from, you won’t be disappointed. They also make vegan brownies, FYI.

Plantarium

A 100% vegan store launched by Deepika, they stock pretty much everything you need, from dairy alternatives and South Indian snacks to cruelty-free cosmetics and household items.

Where: 4th Floor, Diamond park, Above HDFC Bank, Vinayak Nagar, Gachibowli, Hyderabad
