If you thought that engineering students only crafted electronic devices, technical tools, bridges and buildings, think again!

According to a report in the Times Of India, students of the Indian Institute Of Technology, Delhi have developed a plant-based meat alternative. The “meat analogue” replicates the flavour and texture of regular meat, with similar nutritional content.

In India, as of now, there are two shelf-stable mock meats available that we know of (Good Dot and Vezlay). But as more people become aware of vegan and cruelty-free living, consumer demand is likely to ramp up – and developments like these will help grow the market.

Mock meats are gaining popularity globally – a report from Coherent Market Insights  says the global substitute meat market could surpass $6.5 billion by 2026. Earlier this year, plant-based meat manufacturer Beyond Meat’s IPO  was a roaring success, closing with a market capitalization of around $3.8 billion on shares outstanding, including underwriters’ options on the very first day of trade.
