Impossible Foods Unveils Plant-Based Pork

After the runaway success of the Impossible Burger, Impossible Foods is now launching plant-based Impossible Pork. And according to reports, it is very, very similar to the real thing!

The pig-free pork was unveiled at the tech conference CES in Las Vegas this week and is made from soy protein and is designed to look, taste and cook like real meat. While a clear launch date hasn’t been set for the ground pork substitute, their plant-based pork sausage will arrive at Burger King locations across the United States later this month. Some locations in Georgia, Michigan, Illinois, New Mexico and Alabama will serve a croissant breakfast sandwich featuring the Impossible Sausage for a limited time.

Pork is a staple across Asia and Impossible Foods sees a huge opportunity for growth in the region, especially since African Swine Fever has put a dent in pork supply. In a statement to CNN, Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown said, “In the next year or two, we're putting a lot of effort into expanding into international markets, particularly in Asia, where pork is the dominant meat product.” At the event, Impossible Foods showcased their pork substitute in a variety of dishes, including dumplings, banh mi and noodles.

During a press conference at CES, CEO Pat Brown said that traditional meat contributes significantly to "the two biggest threats humanity has ever faced, which is catastrophic climate change and a catastrophic meltdown in biodiversity."

At the moment, plant-based alternatives are more expensive than their animal meat, but that could change once companies like Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat scale up.

Do you think Impossible Burgers and Impossible Pork will make their way to India anytime?
