In the Era of CoronaVirus, Jackfruit Replaces Chicken in Meals

Coronavirus has been declared a Pandemic by the WHO, which has already claimed over 4000 live globally. India has announced a shutdown of visas, schools and colleges being closed down and corporates requesting employees to work remotely. During a time of panic such as this, it is also extremely unfortunate that the rumour mill works overtime, spreading too many stories.

One such rampant rumour is that birds and animals carry coronavirus. The demand for meat plummeted, causing farmers to instantly panic and take varied measures such as burying hens/chicks live. One such incident in Karnataka recently involved 6,000 birds brutally buried alive

On the flipside, meat-eaters have been quick to find solutions since access to poultry has almost overnight been cut off. They’re turned to the humble jackfruit, also known as “kathal” to substitute the meat.

Some have gone on record to say that the kathal biryani is the easiest and delicious alternative to chicken/mutton biryani. The concept of using jackfruit picked up so quickly that the price of jackfruit almost doubled in the market, and went out of stock. Vegetable vendors hope to optimize this opportunity and bring back as much stock as possible to combat the demand.

Here’s hoping for a permanent change from you, meat lovers. The jack-of-all-fruit is here to stay!
