29th June, 2022

The country’s war against environmental pollutants like plastic will now see a significant triumph as Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav shared some heartening news on June 28. Yadav declared that the govt will prohibit single-use plastic from July 1. This essentially means that the type of plastic items that are used just one time before being discarded will be prohibited.

“India will ban the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single-use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the country from July 1, 2022," the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said in a statement.

Speaking of the subject, Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav affirmed, "Govt has given enough time to switch away from single-use plastic."

TAKE A LOOK AT THE LIST OF BANNED ITEMS:

Consumers can be mindful of the fact that they must not use the following items-

Ear buds that have plastic sticks, plastic sticks used to anchor balloons, plastic flags distributed on special days, lollipop or candy sticks, plastic ice- cream sticks, Thermocol that is used for ornamentation, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic glasses, plastic cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives or straws. Apart from this, the ban will extend to trays, wrapping or packing films that cover mithai boxes, plastic covers used in invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR BUSINESSES ACROSS INDIA

As per the environment ministry directive, the production, importation, supplying, circulation and selling or use of single-use plastic, will be banned from July 1, this year. This will mean the effective ban of polystyrene and expanded polystyrene merchandise. Businesses in the packaging industry will face the hurdles of deciding on a precise substitute for locally sourced BOPP films or polypropylene that is widely used to wrap merchandise because it swiftly averts the accumulation of moisture. Moreover, was chosen due to the fact that it carries weight better than a cellophane sheet.

All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association director-general Deepak Ballani shared his two cents on the matter. He stated that the focus wasn’t put on the right facets of waste management. Money Control reports him saying, “We also want Clean India and are ready to transition. But why not focus on the root of the problem – plastic waste. We need to improve waste segregation at source level, and amp up our recycling infrastructure.”

HOW THE BAN WILL BE ENFORCED

In the ministry directive it was stated that in order to ensure active implementation of the ban on known SUP items, there would be control rooms established. These would function on a national and State level by examining unlawful manufacture, importation, stocking, distribution, or sale and use of the barred single-use plastic merchandise.
