India's First Elephant Hospital Opens In Mathura
The first elephant hospital in Indian opened its doors earlier this week in Mathura!
The hospital, spread over 12,000 feet, has been set up adjacent to an elephant conservation and care centre and takes care of injured, sick and geriatric elephants.
The gentle giants receive treatment in an indoor enclosure, and the centre has special equipment like medical hoists, used to life elephants. Here’s what else it has:
- Quarantine facilities
- Ultrasonography
- Wireless digital X Ray
- Thermal imaging
The NGO Wildlife SOS helped set up the facility. In addition to providing elephants with some much-needed medical care and TLC, the hospital is also attracting tourists from India and abroad!
Elephants at the facility
Our nation has a culture of revering and worshipping elephants, but abuse is rampant. They are often ill-treated by untrained and unschooled mahouts, and fall victim to electrocution, poaching, train accidents and poisoning.
“I think by building a hospital we are underlining the fact that elephants need welfare measures as much as any other animal.”
Geeta Seshamani, Co-founder, Wildlife SOS
We couldn’t agree more – elephants need care and protection just like everyone else! Perhaps this will inspire the opening of more such facilities in India.
