On 7th December 2020, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, visited Aleph Farms, the country’s pioneer in cultivated cow meat, and tried out their lab-grown steak.

A SYMBOLIC GESTURE

In recent years, Israel has been on the forefront of FoodTech innovation globally with cultivated meat farms like SuperMeat, MeatTech, and Future Meat Technologies leading the alternate protein scene. Aleph Farms grows meat through cow cells which are developed under a controlled atmosphere. This process uses only a small percentage of resources required for factory farming of animals. Aleph Farms aims to be carbon neutral by 2025.

"With our proven track record in manufacturing and biopharmaceuticals and our talent pool which is the envy of the rest of the world, India has a major role to play in the future of food innovation like cultivated meat. It will demand significant investment in R&D and infrastructure from the highest offices to make this a reality, but it will pay off by enabling us to adhere to our promises as part of the Paris Climate Agreement, to build an affordable, sustainable supply of protein, and to stave off future pandemics." Varun Deshpande, Managing Director GFI India, told Vegan First.

The Visit

The Prime Minister also explored the company’s facilities along with the government’s animal rights advisor, Tal Gilboa and was accompanied by The Good Food Institute Israel’s Managing Director Nir Goldstein during the tasting session. The CEO of Aleph Farms, Didier Toubia, and Goldstein introduced the Prime Minister to Good Food Institute Israel’s National Policy Plan to accelerate the growth of the alternate protein sector in the country.

"It's delicious and guilt-free, I can't taste the difference," said the Prime Minister. "I have directed the State Secretary Tzahi Braverman to appoint a body to serve these industries in order to connect and oversee all the stakeholders operating in this field. Israel will become a powerhouse for alternative meat and alternative protein."

This is a great symbolic gesture for the country which has been rapidly innovating into the alt protein field and aims to lead this industry globally. It is also a crucial step in the present environment, amid the pandemic caused due to the faults of the current food system, and the growing urgency to tackle climate change, whose leading contributor is the animal agriculture industry.
