Mmhonlumo Kikon, Legislator and Spokesperson to the government of Nagaland speaks to veganfirst.com, about the ban on commercial import and trading of dogs, and dog markets, on dog meats, both cooked and uncooked and asks for everyone's support to implement and execute this historic decision.

The ban comes after protests by people and activists, and by an appeal by BJP Member of Lok Sabha, Founder and Chairperson of People for Animals (PFA), Maneka Gandhi.

Earlier this week, Ms. Gandhi made an urgent public appeal to urge the Government of Nagaland to stop the trade and consumption of dog meat after receiving new photographs of dogs tied in sacks for trade, from a Nagaland-based animal protection organization. The appeal led to more than 125,000 people writing to the Nagaland government and the government also taking this much-needed progressive action.

Earlier in March, Mizoram also placed a ban on Dog meat. China also re-categorized dogs as pets this year.
