Jason Momoa Promotes Sustainable Fashion With New Vegan Sneakers Made From Algae

With environmental concerns on the rise, celebrities are choosing sustainable fashion practices and promoting an environmentally conscious lifestyle. Keeping with this trend, American actor Jason Momoa has released two sustainable vegan sneakers made from algae. The limited-edition shoes are a part of his On The Roam collection in collaboration with a brand called So iLL, along with the assistance of BLOOM.

BLOOM is an initiative to create sustainable materials out of algae blooms. Algae bloom, or the surplus growth of algae in water bodies is harmful for aquatic ecosystems as it lowers oxygen levels in the water and blocks sunlight.

The sustainable sneakers use foam made from algae as insoles, instead of the conventional plastic foam. The two shoes, Unity Purple and Yaya Lavender Roamers also use organic cotton and cork and are completely biodegradable. The outer rubber soles have also been modified to hasten the decomposition process in landfills.

The design of the shoes is inspired by Momoa’s tattoos.

The actor posted a picture of him holding the shoes on his Instagram, writing:

The Aquaman star has been vocal about environmental degradation and the climate crisis in the past, and even spoke at the United Nations General Assembly. In 2019, he launched a line of canned water called Mananalu made from recycled aluminum to spread awareness about the excess of single-use plastics polluting the world’s oceans.
