Actor and animal activist Joaquin Phoenix has won PETA’s Person Of The Year award. "Joaquin Phoenix never misses an opportunity to turn the spotlight away from himself and onto animals'' plight and to set a great example of walking the vegan walk," PETA president Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement.

Phoenix has been vegan since the age of three when he witnessed a fish being killed and decided that causing pain to other creatures was something he just didn’t want to be a part of. His fiancée, fellow actor Rooney Mara, is also vegan.

The actor was the narrator for the documentary Earthlings and has also served as executive producer of the film The Animal People, which released earlier this year. A film over a decade in the making, it follows 6 activists who have been labelled domestic terrorist for leading protests against a major animal-testing company.

Phoenix rarely shies away from speaking up for animals - in fact, during the Toronto International Film Festival this year where Joker was screened, Phoenix took out the time for a subway vigil organised by Toronto Big Save – that’s how committed he is to the cause!
