KFC To Test Vegan Options This Year

When a fast food joint has the word chicken in its name, it's hard to imagine it as being vegan-friendly. But times are changing and consumers are demanding more meat-free and cruelty-free options. To keep up, KFC has decided to do a test-run of vegan products in the UK.

The company that created a global empire based on one dish alone - fried chicken- is working on vegan and vegetarian options that will taste like its popular fried chicken dishes. In an interview with The Telegraph,  the company's innovation director Jack Hinchcliffe said their team was hard at work. 

“Veganism as a trend has really blown up. We’re currently in the process of working on both vegetarian and vegan options in the innovation kitchen here in our head office.”

While the finer details aren't out, the officials at KFC say it won't be a bean burger, but something that's more authentic and close to current KFC menu options. He said, "For us, it's about taking the amazing tastes of KFC and offering that in a vegetarian or vegan alternative."

The move to introduce meat-free options comes after 12,600 consumers signed a petition asking the chain to create vegan-friendly fried chicken alternatives last year.
