London Is The Most Vegan-Friendly City Of 2019!

For the second year in a row, London has been named the most vegan-friendly city in the world by vegan & vegetarian restaurant guide HappyCow. Other cities that rank high in the list include New York, Berlin and Los Angeles, coming in at 2, 3 and 4, while Bangkok pushed into the top ten for the first time.

Happy Cow has a number of parameters when it comes to deciding which cities make the cut:

• The number of vegan restaurants in a 5-mile radius within the most vegan-restaurant dense area in the city;
• The number of restaurants with vegan and vegetarian menu options in the same 5-mile radius;
• HappyCow’s impression of the overall vegan-friendliness of a city.

Said Ken Spector, Principal, HappyCow: “Veganism continues to become a mainstream lifestyle in London and this city takes veganism to a new level.”

According to HappyCow data, London saw an “explosion” of vegan restaurants in the city in 2019. In 2017, it became the first city on the site to cross 100 completely vegan restaurants and currently has 125 vegan restaurants in a 5-mile radius within the city. It has 152 fully vegan restaurants citywide.

But it’s not just restaurants: HappyCow also listed an abundance of vegan-friendly stalls, bakeries, cafes, smoothie bars and a plant-based cheesemonger called La Fauxmagerie.

Notable picks on the HappyCow list include pizza joints Purezza, PickyWops and Death By Pizza, vegan “chicken” shop Temple Of Seitan, Japanese restaurant Itadakizen and the Caribbean-inspired Rogue Vegan.

A survey by The Vegan Society indicates that the number of vegans in Great Britain quadrupled between 2016 and 2019, with vegans numbering 600,000 or 1.16% of the population this year.
