Good news Delhi vegans! French bakery and patisserie chain L’Opera has just gotten vegan-friendly – you can now enjoy your cup of coffee with a splash of soy or almond milk.

The bakery made the announcement on Instagram, with the tag, “Whether you’re a vegan, sensitive to milk or just don’t like the taste, almond and soya milk are a fabulous alternative.”

Coffee chains across India are slowly ramping up their vegan offerings, with Starbucks and Café Coffee Day putting plant-based mylks on their menus. CCD has the option of soy milk, along with a vegan shake made with dairy-free whipped cream. Starbucks has the option of both soy and almond milk, at an extra charge.

Globally, too, plant milk consumption is on the rise as dairy continues to dip.

According to the Dairy Farmers of America, in 2018, sales dropped by $1.1 billion – totalling $13.6 billion vs $14.7 billion in 2017. On the other hand, oat milk and non-dairy milk blend sales for the period between June 2017 and 2018 rose at the rates of 23% and 52% respectively, indicating a clear shift in consumer preferences.

The scene is similar in the UK as well – plant milk sales have grown by 30% since 2015, and close to 1000 dairy farms shut shop between 2013 and 2016.

While India has a long way to go, several homegrown plant milk brands have mushroomed in the past two years, with some brands (like Faymylk and Goodmylk) delivering across the country. (Check out our guide to plant mylks in India).
