Make The Smart Switch To Steel Straws

A few years ago, a pair of marine biologists in Costa Rica came across a majestic Olive Ridley turtle with a strange-looking, white parasitic worm protruding from its nose.  Since the turtle was struggling, the two decided to do the right thing and pull the worm out.

Except on closer inspection, it wasn’t a worm at all – but a plastic straw. Choking the turtle, with its nose bleeding.

Imagine this scenario. It’s a hot summer day. You are on the beach, sipping fresh tender coconut water through a straw, filled with electrolytes, minerals, calcium, vitamins… and a dose of chemicals. Toxic chemicals that can mess up estrogen levels in your system. How? Because most commercial straws are made from polypropylene, a petroleum derivative. Easy on the manufacturers, but a hazard to our health.

This is the damage that just 1 plastic straw can do.

Put That Plastic Away

plastic oceans

Polluted seas are killing marine life

Our oceans are already choked with plastic, to the extent that there may be no more marine life left in the next 30 years.

Plastic straws make up less than a quarter of a per cent of the plastic waste dumped in water bodies, but it remains one of the top trash items.

Humans have been using tubes to sip on beverages since the Mesopotamian civilization, using natural materials like reed. It’s only when plastic became mainstream that straws made from it became the norm.

These deadly contraptions are so omnipresent, even those of us who know better tend to ignore the damage plastic straws cause.

Grabbing a green smoothie after an invigorating gym session? Smart choice! The plastic polypropylene straw you’re using to drink it? Bad move.

Switch To Steel

plastic waste

Millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in our oceans each year

The change begins with our drinking habits. If we choose to drink straight out of our glasses and mugs, we could eliminate the need for straws once and for all. But there are times when only a straw will do.

For example, little kids. Or hospital patients who need to consume liquids lying down. Even those times when you’re binge-watching your favourite show with a glass of lemonade. We’ll admit it – straws are fun. That’s why it makes sense to switch to reusable steel straws…you can have your drink and sip it too!

Steel straws tick all the boxes.

  • Sturdy
  • Eco-friendly
  • Functional
  • Fun to use!

Also, they don’t get all wet and soggy like paper straws (no offence, paper).
