Mumbai's Earth Cafe Starts Vegan Free Food Drive For The Needy During Lockdown
16 April 2021
Mumbai's Earth Cafe started a free food drive this Sunday to feed the homeless and needy during the lockdown period in the city.
The cafe started the drive on Sunday, distributing 100% vegan food, such as vegetable rice pulao to migrant workers, their children, and unemployed people. They have been giving out up to 150 parcels everyday.
The team also distributed food and water outside the Mahim dargah during Ramzan, as well as outside the Mahim church.
Vegan First asked the founder, Vik Khatwani, about what transpired for him to do this.
"It began with a small distribution drive of 20 meals. Everyday on our way to work we used to see empty stomachs on the empty streets. They were all people who were struggling because they had no income. So we started distributing it outside our cafe initially."
A friend of Vik's loved the idea and decided to support him in their endeavour.
"After we got the initial support, we started seeing that all our customers were equally excited. It just grew so quickly. Today we are giving out 200 meals," he adds, sounding amazed.
It is commendable to see this restaurant taking up such initiatives during these unprecedented times.
If you would like to donate, each meal costs Rs. 78 and the money can be transferred via GPay 9619033393 or PayTM 9819828989.
