Pakistan to make Animal Abuse Illegal with this new Law

Every small step we take towards reducing animal cruelty counts. Through our efforts, if we are able to reduce the suffering of even one animal, it makes a huge difference. Following this trail, Sindh province in Pakistan might soon make animal abuse illegal.

According to Dailytimes, “A draft bill on the matter was approved by the Sindh cabinet on December 30, 2017. The bill states that animals will have a right to adequate shelter and protection from all kinds of abuse.”

Pakistan currently has the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1890 which prohibits any form of physical abuse and negligence, but just like in India, it is rarely considered. With this new draft, the severity of abuse and cruelty on animals might lessen.

Dailytimes states, “The draft law has punishments ranging from three months to three years, depending on the gravity of the offence.”

If this law gets clearance, the fines and punishment for abusing animals in Pakistan is going to be higher than the punishment in India. In our country, if somebody kills or tortures an animal, he has to pay a mere Rs. 50 fine, which can go up to Rs. 100, if repeated. Let's hope both countries take the matter of animal rights more seriously so that animals can live freely without harm.

The legalization of this bill will be a huge win for animal rights activists and animal lovers throughout Pakistan, especially Sindh.
