Patanjali involved in live animal testing?

Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali has made a huge name for itself over the last few years. Giving the Indian middle-class everyday grocery and Ayurvedic products, the company has amassed a huge fortune of more than 10,000 crore (which is more than $ 1.6 billion), giving traditional multinational FMCG brands a run for their money.

Despite the controversies surrounding the brand and the man behind it, Patanjali’s popularity has never dwindled –but Ramdev’s latest move has activists questioning the ethos of the brand.

Animal Testing in Ayurveda?

A couple of months back, the Baba himself announced that for the first time in history, an Ayurvedic brand would conduct animal testing.

Patanjali’s Plan:

  • Drug the animals
  • Study the effect and potency of the drugs
  • Cut open the animals

A Necessary Evil

Baba Ramdev stated that while he believes in the philosophy of non-violence, and has never hurt a living being, he feels that animal testing is a 'necessary evil', and it will be balanced out, as it will benefit millions of people.

Animal Testing is a common practice in several companies

We’re not trying to single out Patanjali here, but think about it - with hundreds of other FMCG, pharma, cosmetics and healthcare brands completely foregoing (and in some cases, never even participating in) animal testing, it's safe to assume the Baba’s brand doesn’t need to, either.

AND, if a brand feels the need to do so, it's safe to assume that the problem lies in the ingredients – which make them potentially dangerous to humans, prompting the "necessary evil" of animal testing.

The most common animals used for testing are mice/rats, rabbits and monkeys

If something in the ingredients list is unfit for us to consume, why should it be force-fed to animals?

So, spread the word, vegans and animal-lovers alike: share it on your social media pages, write to Patanjali and demand that they find cruelty-free ways to test their products. Non-violence applies to all forms of life!
