The novel Coronavirus originated at a Chinese wet food market in Wuhan. It is no secret that this has caused havoc globally putting the entire world at risk. Time and again several pandemics and Zoonotic diseases have resulted due to animal agriculture. Ebola, SARS, Plague, Bird Flu, Coronavirus.

Scientists believe that the Covid-19 causing coronavirus first lurked in a bat in China and hopped to another animal, before getting passed on to humans. This has put the entire human species at risk. Yet the Chinese have learnt no lessons. Wildlife animals sold for meat in several other countries too. A petition online has been going around to urge the WHO (World Health Organisation) to permanently ban wildlife animal trade and meat across the globe.

According to the Hindustan Times, "The markets have gone back to operating in exactly the same way as they did before coronavirus," Washington Examiner quoted a correspondent of 'A Mail on Sunday' as saying. However, the markets are under watchful eyes of guards, who ensure no one is able to take pictures of the blood-soaked floors, slaughtering of dogs and rabbits, and scared animals cramped in cages.

There are however some Chinese citizens who have rubbished these reports. We wait to hear from the horse's mouth directly and the Chinese government to declare it's a stance on the matter.

The first major pandemic was the Plague of Justinian, which struck the Byzintine empire in the year 541 AD. The bacterium responsible has been identified as Yersinia Pestis, commonly known as bubonic plague, a pathogen carried by rats and transferred to humans through fleas. After the plague had run its course, 25-50 million people had died, which was about a quarter of the earth’s population then.

Proximity to animals, in general, is the most important factor in the rise of new animal-to-human diseases. "The new coronavirus pandemic would not have started if we didn’t farm and eat animals," says famous influencer Ed Winters. The global authority on Health - World Health Organisation (W.H.O.) feels the same. The W.H.O. has made it clear that as long as people eat meat there is some risk of infection.

It's only logical that there is a global ban on wildlife markets. China has clearly not learnt and lessons and must put an end to wildlife meat markets which may lead to future pandemics.  As our technologies and artificial intelligence evolves, so should our diets.
