New York City introduces “Vegan Fridays” To Nearly 1 Million Students

Nearly 1 million public school students will have access to healthy plant-based nutrition at least once a week, thanks to Eric Adams the Vegan Mayor of New York City who announced on Thursday that all of the city’s schools will serve Vegan options every Friday. The announcement came through NYC Public School’s Twitter saying “cafeterias are going vegan on Fridays! Plant-based options in schools means healthy eating and healthy living, and improving the quality of life for thousands of NYC students.”

The public health initiative comes after a month of Adams assuming the office. The popular mayor himself has claimed to have helped his diabetes with a plant-only diet. 

"I love healthy food and I love life, and our children should not continually be fed food that's causing their health care crisis" – Mayor Eric Adam

Among some opposition from animal farmers and traditionalists, the move has received a largely positive reaction with many coming out in support of school staff. Maria Diaz a teacher tweeted this while celebrating the step to feeding healthy nutritious food to New York kids –

Even though Milk is still allowed in city schools, as required by the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Education said it would offer some “lighter dairy products” on Fridays as it transitions away from cheese completely. Non-vegan menu items are available upon request, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Education.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that phasing out animal slavery is not very dissimilar to phasing out chattel slavery as was done by Abraham Lincoln.
