‘The End Of Medicine’ - Exec Produced By Rooney Mara & Joaquin Phoenix to be released in theaters

Gravitas Ventures has acquired distribution rights in North America for the health documentary “The End of Medicine” executive produced by Earthlings narrator and Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix and two-time Oscar nominee Rooney Mara. The film is produced by the maker of “Cowspiracy” and “What the Health” Keegan Kuhn and is directed by BAFTA-winning documentary maker of 73 cows Alex Lockwood. There are plans to release it in theaters and on digital platforms by this summer.

The End of Medicine aims to highlight how the way in which we consume and treat animals, drives the emergence of existential health threats such as zoonotic disease, chronic disease, and perhaps even more worryingly, antimicrobial resistance. 

“When we started shooting this documentary in October 2019, we never anticipated that we would be thrust into the midst of a global pandemic - the very thing our film seeks to understand. For us, it really drives home the importance of understanding the causes of diseases like COVID-19.” – Lockwood Films

Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have worked through many initiatives raising awareness of animal agriculture and its ill effects both on the other animals themselves as well as on human animals at large. Joaquin was arguably the first to raise the issue of enslavement and impregnation of cows in dairy on the stage of Oscar awards. Talking about this film -

“The animal agriculture industry props up its business of keeping thousands upon thousands of animals housed in soiled conditions by the overuse of antibiotics. We cannot exploit and manipulate other animals on a massive scale without corresponding and terrifying consequences,” said Phoenix and Mara

Exposing the dirty reality behind nonhuman animal farms is a tough job especially when the laws, government in general, the public and large the media are all in denial of it. On their motivation to make this film Lockwood and Kuhn said 

“We have been frustrated with the failure of mainstream media to properly address the threat of disease coming from animal agriculture, both before and during the current pandemic, The End Of Medicine is an alarm bell and warning of what is to come if we don’t change.”  

With the increasing willingness of people to learn the effects of animal agriculture and an observed shift towards plant-based alternatives, companies across the sectors have pivoted their businesses to align themselves accordingly. On this recent acquisition, Brett Rogalsky, Gravitas Ventures manager of acquisitions, in a statement
