Q & A: Is Lard Vegan?

Lard is obtained from the fatty tissue of pigs, cows and sheep. It is a semi-solid, soft substance, with a look and texture similar to that of ghee. It is also commonly referred to as animal fat.

Lard is extracted from the fatty tissue of an animal through a process called ‘rendering’ where the tissue is cooked until the fat seperates from the lard. Since it is used as a cooking fat in many foods, lard may go unnoticed sometimes. Even foods like french fries are at times fried in lard, although this is not common.

Today, the use of lard has declined and it is slowly being replaced by vegan fats made from hydrogenated vegetable shortening.

Since it is obtained from animal parts, lard is not vegan.
