Her Highness Sheikha Arwa Al Qassimi, a member of the royal family of Sharjah, is known for her good works and a big heart. In the past, she has helped raise awareness and money for organisations such as Food for Change, Bangalore Cares and Sightseers to name a few. This time she set her sights on the Mumbai based, vegan start-up called Wegan foods.

Wegan Foods recently got funding from the princess to expand their outfit and get a commercial kitchen, to increase inventory and brand building. This means that Mumbai should start to see more vegan, dairy-free and nutritious products this year. When speaking to One Green Planet, CEO of Wegan Foods, Kinjal Darukhanawala said “The first product development took close to six months. The idea is not just being vegan but also carrying a line of products that are delicious and nutritious for all age groups to devour. A lot of people have preconceived notions about vegan food; they think it is boring, tasteless and far from original taste and flavour. Our brand plans to banish these notions.”

We couldn’t agree more, vegan food is delicious and just as good as any of its counterparts. With this new injection of money, we hope that Wegan Foods can expand pan India, so we can all stock our pantries with more vegan edibles. For now, according to One Green Planet, they plan to expand in Mumbai with existing businesses in the food industry through modern trade and food delivery apps.

A fun fact, Darukhanawala says “We plan to hire about 90 percent women, that too from organisations that groom and empower women from disadvantaged backgrounds. This was the biggest motivation for Sheikha Arwa Al Qassimi to invest in our company,” as told to BusinessLine. This story keeps getting better and better, we hope more people will be as generous as the princess; but more so we hope Indian companies will adopt the principals of veganism, feminism and ahimsa, just like Wegan Foods.

Stay tuned: Wegan Foods plan on launching their dairy free cheese in October this year. It will be soy and gluten free.. and delicious!

But Mumbaikars don't fret,  if you're craving vegan food and want it ASAP, there are many options like Veganbites Bird Song Cafe, Yogisattva, Vegan Tiffin and  Bombay Bizzare Bakers who provide vegan food in Mumbai.
