SolarOcta Energy Services LLP is a sustainable energy company that is committed to making India a power surplus nation by harnessing green energy and resources. They offer a wide range of products and services, from solar LED lights to rooftop power plants, rooftop bio-gas generator and rooftop rainwater harvesting and more.

Part of their mission is to make the planet a cleaner and greener place and to make sustainable living accessible to all. In step with this philosophy, they’ve launched a plastic-free zero waste travel kit to help people reduce their carbon footprint and cut down on single-use plastic. We spoke to founder Sumit Kalra about this new initiative.

What prompted you to move into reusables and start the Zero Waste Travel Kit?

While the installation and consultancy of solar rooftop plants is our major business, we wanted to create awareness and make a difference in the sustainable sector starting from the bottom and from within.

If you look around, we use a lot of plastics, especially plastic straws, so we launched the SolaOcta Sustainability (SOS) Zero Waste travel kit on World Environment Day in 2019 to highlight our commitment.

Tell us more about the products in the kit?

We really do not need plastic straws or plastic spoons and forks when eating out at our favourite restaurant or partying at a friends place. Plastic is convenient, but it’s killing our ecosystem and endangering life on the planet. It is also one of the most-found trash items in our oceans. A life without plastic pollution is what we want, and we believe it is easy to do so by making a few simple swaps. This is what prompted us to create the Solar Octa Sustainability (Sos) Zero Waste Travel Kit. It contains:

  • 100% Natural Bamboo wood (food safe) set comprised of 1 knife, 1 spoon and 1 fork.
  • 1 toothbrush (with activated charcoal soft BPA-free nylon bristles).
  • 1 food-grade stainless steel straw with cleaning brush.

All these come in a string jute bag.

Do you think more Indians are waking up to the concepts of sustainability, eco-friendly and zero waste products?

Of course they are, people are getting more aware of the pollution they are causing because of the little, sometimes unconscious things they do everyday. For example, having a fresh juice at your neighbourhood juice stall starts with the plastic straw they provide. But where do these straws go? In landfills, and they stay there for hundreds of years.

People are now becoming aware of the ill effects of using disposable cutlery. Even food delivery aggregators are asking customers to opt for no cutlery while ordering. Plus, social media campaigns, schools and colleges are joining hands in helping people and children understand the ill-effects of non-environmental friendly products. On top of all this, I would say kudos to Mr. Modi who in his Independence Day speech talked about reducing plastic pollution and single use plastic.

But there's still more work to do to spread the zero waste message to a wider audience.

Do you have any other products or services in the pipeline?

We do have a few more products in the pipeline but they are under research and development. So, as of now, we have the SOS Zero Waste Travel Kit to express our vision.
