The future is vegan would not be an overstatement, especially when most large companies are providing vegan options, celebrities are not just endorsing veganism but following it and everyone is talking about sustainable living.

Starbucks, the largest coffee chain in the world, will be launching a new plant-based menu exclusively for China which will feature plant-based protein meal options from Beyond Meat and Omnipork. The menus will also feature the popular non-dairy beverages brand Oatly. The advent of coronavirus has compelled many people to reconsider their diet, considering that A Beyond Burger claims to consume 99% less water and 93% less land compared to a Meat Burger. As per USDA Economic Research Service, An average vegan and vegetarian person generate 1.5 and 1.7 tonnes of CO2  emissions per year, while an average meat eater can generate nearly double the level, between 2.5 to 3.3 tonnes of CO2  emissions per year. Starbucks is committed to being “resource positive” as it stated in a public letter to all company stakeholders.

Resource positive means storing more carbon than it emits, eliminating waste, and providing more clean, freshwater than it uses.

Several studies that have shown the negative environmental impacts of meat consumption, have led many consumers to reduce their meat intake and eat more plant-based foods instead. Even China is no exception, vegan dietary options are slowly gaining popularity.

It is clear now that the old paradigm of exploitation will not sustain longer, times have changed and people wish to buy products that make them feel good about themselves, makes them feel good about their choices and values. They associate with such a brand and such a brand even sustains longer because it considers the planet above profits. Starbucks has joined the club  by including the sustainability at the core of its business operations, and that means going plant-based!
