Switching To A Plant-Based Diet Twice A Week As Good As Planting 14 Billion Trees
Swapping out meat from the menu permanently may sound like a daunting task. But German food-tech firm, Greenforce, says eating a plant-based diet just twice a week is enough to make a difference.
A study conducted by Greenforce has concluded that if the entire adult population of the UK replaced their meals with plant-based foods twice a week, it would be enough to save 291 million metric tons of greenhouse gasses in a year.
291 million metric tons is the amount of carbon 13.88 billion trees would be able to absorb from the atmosphere in a year.
TWICE A WEEK IS ALL IT TAKES
Patrik Baboumain, vegan strongman and ambassador for Greenforce put his weight behind the report and said, “The environmental impact of modern, meat-heavy diets is massive. This means we have a great opportunity to make big savings in our carbon footprints, as well as our land and water footprints by altering our food choices. Just by switching a few meals a week to plant-based options, we can make an incredibly positive impact for our climate and help preserve our land, soils, and water systems.
“When we look at the findings of this analysis, the results are impossible to ignore. 291 million metric tonnes of GHG could be saved by switching just two meals a week, per year, for the average UK adult. And that’s just two meals a week! Can you imagine if we can get that number up to four or five a week someday?
“Of course, it gets easier for people to switch if the plant-based meals that are available are tasty, easy-to-make, and healthy. So that’s exactly why we, GREENFORCE, have put almost a decade of research into creating meals that are not only sustainable but also delicious, practical and highly nutritional.
“We can all make a big change, one meal at a time!
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW
Many studies over the past few years have been repeatedly pointing out that if humans continue to consume the way they are, the outcome for the planet is going to keep getting worse.
A study published in the journal Nature pointed out that growing animals for food accounts for nearly 60% of the total greenhouse gas emissions. Following this, the Plant-Based Treaty urged world leaders to fix the global food system.
A recently released IPCC report also concluded that the emissions of greenhouse gases need to be halved by 2030 or the world is looking toward very catastrophic climate calamities.
While there is an urgent need to switch to do more to prevent a climate crisis, one of the easiest things we can do is to switch to a plant-based diet, even if it is just twice a week.
