Global beauty brand The Body Shop has announced its goal to be certified as 100% vegan by the end of 2023. While the brand does not test on animals, some of its products still contain animal-derived ingredients such as milk and honey. However, 60% of The Body Shop's products are vegan-friendly.

The company is aiming to receive the certification by The Vegan Society in an attempt to become more sustainable. It will become the first beauty brand to receive this certification from the organization. The Vegan Society's logo is possibly the most reputed certification due to their extremely meticulous process of vetting each supplier and manufacturer. The Body Shop has more than 3,700 raw materials.

Moreover, keeping with their efforts towards sustainability, the company will be establishing refill stations in 500 stores across the globe. This will be followed by 300 more stores by 2022.

The Body Shop also has an in-store recycling programme – Return, Recycle and Repeat – which will be seen in 800 stores across 14 markets by the end of this year.

"Going 100% vegan is a natural next step for us and vegan beauty is a critical next step in our sustainability and environmental endeavors. This, along with our global refill and in-store recycling programmes makes The Body Shop a destination for ethically-minded customers,” commented Lionel Thoreau, Global Brand Director, The Body Shop.
With reference to refill stations, he adds: "We want refills to become mainstream - easy and accessible to everyone. This is just our first step in a 5-year plan to roll out refill stations across the globe."

The brand will have all of its formulations certified as vegan, and will also have The Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark logo on its labels. Their products are already cruelty-free and the company even campaigned against animal testing in 1989, becoming the first beauty brand to do so.

Chantelle Adkins, Director of Business Development at The Vegan Society said: "Body Shop's ambition to achieve 100% Vegan Trademark certification across their substantial portfolio of formulations demonstrates their solid commitment to deliver the very best in efficacious and planet-loving products."

The beauty industry is rapidly adopting cruelty-free and vegan certifications in an attempt to be more eco-friendly and animals-friendly. This year two major brands – Garnier and TRESemme – banned animal testing on their products. Moreover, in the current pandemic, consumers are opting for clean beauty products, and brands such as Lotus have already started carving a space for themselves in this market.
