As part of an initiative called MeatOut by the Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM) which was started in 1985, New York Mayor has signed a proclamation into effect that will see the city celebrating Meat-free Day’ every year on the 20th of March.

New York joins 40 other cities and states like Houston, Dallas, Columbus and Colorado in this initiative that is looking to get people to eat more plants.

MAYOR ADAMS AND HIS PLANT-FORWARD JOURNEY

Mayor Eric Adams has always been vocal about his transformation after he changed his diet. He has been quoted saying, “food is doing more of an injustice than mass incarceration”.

In 2016 Adams transitioned to a plant-based diet after temporarily losing his eyesight as a side-effect of Type 2 Diabetes.

“I thought it was just sleep in my eyes and my eyes adjusting to the light,” Adams said. “But the cloudiness didn’t change. Something wrong was going on here.”

Since then, he has been on a mission to empower people towards health. Adams has also authored a book chronicling his journey towards health.

He has also started lifestyle medicine clinics across the city to help people better manage their lifestyle diseases just like he did. ‘Vegan Fridays’ is another initiative spearheaded by the mayor to ensure that the kids are introduced to healthier foods in school meals.

PARTY LIKE A VEGAN IN NEW YORK

The campaign intends to highlight the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based diet. Some restaurants have introduced special vegan and vegetarian menus for the week starting March 20th. Other educational events have been planned across the city.

The New York government and MeatOut initiative is also working with a popular vegan restaurant P.S. Kitchen to spearhead the festivities.

Eric Lindstrom, FARM executive director, was all raise for the city’s involvement in the initiative.

“As a New Yorker myself, I am particularly proud of this proclamation,” Lindstrom said. “The advances Mayor Adams has made toward a plant-based future, and Vegan Fridays in New York City schools, align perfectly with our mission and the mission of MeatOut.”
