The Vegan India Movement conducted its biggest Tweetathon till date on April 8 2021. Activists from all across the country used the social media platform to spread awareness about speciesism, and over 20,000 tweets on the topic were posted.

VIM was also a part of the top six trending topics on Twitter yesterday. The Tweetathon used the hashtags #GoVegan and #EndSpeciesism, and was an effort to talk about the ideals of veganism to the Indian audience.

Richa Annie Thomas of  the Vegan India Movement, says:

"Most people in India are still unaware about the Vegan movement, and mainstream media often describes Veganism as a diet. One of the aims of the Tweetathon was to dispel this myth. We wanted to make people understand that it's not a diet, but a social justice movement for animals to dismantle Speciesism. Another aim was to help people come face to face with the Speciesism they knowingly and unknowingly practice due to societal conditioning."

Sadaa Sayed, a Telugu film actress and owner of the vegan restaurant Earthlings, also shared the message on her social media. Famous musician Anushka Manchanda also tweeted on the topic.

On World Vegan Day 2020, VIM also conducted a nationwide survey of vegans in India to record the grassroots activism taking place in the country.

This virtual gathering of Indian vegan activists is a positive sign for the growth of the movement in the country. The Tweetathon was also instrumental in bringing the issue to the attention of the larger Indian audience.
