These Vegan Hair Dyes Are Good For You And The Environment

Hair colour is an easy way to update your look, cover greys, play around with your hair and have some fun.

You’re probably aware that chemical hair dyes are doing your scalp no favours. But the problem is more deep-rooted (no pun intended!) than that. Hair dyes, in their modern avatar, are silently destroying your hair, skin and the environment.

What Happens When You Dye Your Hair

First things first – hair doesn’t naturally absorb colour. So hair dyes (permanent dyes) aren’t pigments, they are a mixture of chemicals that activate colour formation.

Once the chemicals come into contact with each other, you need to let the dye sit for a good 30 minutes for the reaction to occur.

Modern non-natural hair dye is derived from coal tar and petrochemicals to produce chemical compounds like:

  •  Ammonia
  • Hydrogen Peroxide
  • Para-phenylenediamine (PPD)
  • 1,2,4 trihydroxybenzene

Commercial dyes are derived from petrochemicals

These are just some of the chemicals that go into hair dye – and it’s safe to assume that if you can’t pronounce it, it has no business being in your beauty cupboard.

What Chemical Dyes Are Actually Doing To Your Hair

Several studies have indicated that commercial hair dye is just plain bad for you.

From potential genotoxicity to increasing the risk of bladder cancer, exposure to chemical hair dye puts individuals at risk.

As for what happens when our bodies absorb dye compounds – there’s not even enough research to give us a clear picture of the possible damage.

Prolonged use can result in allergies

Down The Drain

Rinsing off the goop on your hair to reveal your shiny new tresses is one of most satisfying parts of the colouring process – who doesn’t love a big reveal?  But with every wash, chemicals enter (and alter) our water supply.

The USGS (US Geological Survey) found hair dye metabolites (chemical compounds) in the water supply of close to 80% of the urban sites they monitored.

According to scientist and professor of colour chemistry David Lewis, hair dye can form carcinogenic compounds by interacting with other chemicals like chlorine in water treatment plants.

Go Natural With Vegan Dyes

Hair dyeing isn’t a new phenomenon – it’s been a trend since the Egyptian and Roman civilizations. Our ancestors used natural ingredients and got along just fine – so why can’t we?

Of all natural dyes, henna has endured – and when mixed with other plant-dyes, creates a similar (and much less harmful) dyeing agent.

Henna has been around for centuries

Radico uses henna and other herbs in their line of all-natural, organic hair dyes. These dyes come in powdered form and need to be mixed with water - that's it!

  • 100% plant-based & organic
  • Ecocert-approved
