This Husband-Wife Duo Are Creating Uber Stylish Vegan Accessories From Cactus And Pineapple

The husband-and-wife duo behind this innovative idea, Manan and Kriti Nahar, are business and design graduates who have their minds set on running a business without leaving a huge carbon footprint.

Manan says, “I grew up in Udaipur- the city of lakes and I saw the need for leaving positive footprints on the environment. Bejo is our attempt at turning ordinary products to extraordinary eco-conscious ones.”

Kriti, a graduate of the prestigious NIFT, was influenced by her father’s love for traditional Indian crafts.

She says, “I want to show that sustainability can be stylish too! When I came across these sturdy vegan fabrics made from cactus and pineapple, I immediately knew that I had to use these in our collection.

We often notice how non-leather products disintegrate and the top layer of our bags start peeling off within a year of use. This results in us having to constantly purchase bags every year. I have ensured that with these plant-based leathers, we can use the bags for much longer with little care.”

With Bejo, both of them are also marrying the future of sustainable fabrics with traditional Indian art like hand weaving and hand embroidery.

BUT WHAT IS CACTUS LEATHER AND PINEAPPLE LEATHER?

Cactus leather, also called Desserto, is a vegan alternative to animal hide and can be used as a replacement in a variety of products. Desserto is currently fabricated in Mexico using leaves from the prickly pear cactus.

Pineapple leaf fabric, called Piñatex, is a sustainably sourced, cruelty-free material alternative. It is made using leftover leaves from pineapple cultivations allowing it to have a low environmental impact.
