Unilever Sets €1 Billion Sales Target to Make 'Planet-Friendly Food' More Accessible
23 Nov 2020
Unilever has taken a step to contribute towards sustainable and healthy eating by releasing a sales target of €1 billion for plant-based meat and dairy alternatives in the next five to seven years.
Unilever’s new Future Foods initiative aims to make plant-based, nutritious and environmentally-friendly food options widely available, as they believe that “if we want people to make the switch, we need plant-based options to be more accessible, affordable and appetising. They need to be the easy, obvious choice.” The corporation has highlighted the impact of our food system on the acceleration of climate change, its negative effect on health, and excessive food waste as the reason for such an initiative.
“As one of the largest food manufacturers in the world, we have a responsibility to help shape a global food system that is fair for everyone.”
The corporation acquired The Vegetarian Butcher in 2018, which will add to its sales, along with brands like Ben & Jerry’s and Magnum, which have recently released dairy-free ice creams.
Unilever has also pledged to reduce the salt, sugar, and calorie content in their products, double the amount of nutritious foods they offer, and halve the food waste in their operations by 2025.
