International conglomerate Unilever has partnered with Enough, a fermented foods startup in order to expand its plant-based meat portfolio. The deal is a step by Unilever towards reaching its €1 billion annual sales target to make plant-based foods more accessible and promote a sustainable food system.

Enough develops mycoprotein which is derived from fungi. The fermentation technology employed by the food tech startup is also zero-waste, which aligns with Unilever’s pledge to reduce waste production in manufacturing. Unilever has stated its interest in utilizing Enough’s mycoprotein called Abunda.

“Producing vast quantities of healthy and sustainable protein is one of the most urgent global priorities. There’s a rapid transition in the food industry and we are excited with this collaboration with Unilever and The Vegetarian Butcher, which truly supports our aim to create impact and scale,” commented Andrew Beasley, commercial director, Enough.

Formerly known as 3F Bio, Enough is also planning to establish a 50,000 tonne mycoprotein factory to accelerate production.

Unilever has been eyeing the plant-based market with the rapid surge in the alternative protein sector, and aims to become a key competitor. It announced its €1 billion annual sales target for plant-based foods for the next five to seven years in November 2020. Moreover, brands under Unilever such as Ben and Jerry’s and Hellman’s have recently started catering to the growing demand for plant-based foods.

Carla Hilhorst, EVP of R&D for foods and refreshment at Unilever said:

“Plant-based foods is one of Unilever’s fastest growing segments and we’re delighted to partner with Enough to develop more sustainable protein products that are delicious, nutritious, and a force for good. We’re excited by the potential that this technology has for future innovations across our portfolio, and we can’t wait to launch more plant-based foods that help people cut down on meat, without compromising on taste.”
